Whereas generally when people study such a topic it's purely entertainment, and nothing to do with the Dharma particularly; it's something completely removed from one's own development. I remember meeting a young man from South Africa. ed to meditate together; he was a very diligent student. Then his girlfriend talked to him, or something happened, and he felt very bad about that for several weeks. He was thinking whether he ~hould meditate or not, and he decided to meditate. Then he went home and I don't know what happened to him.

So those are the general patterns that happen. And all of them should be experienced. I would rather use the word experience, than even being aware, because when you say we have to be aware of it, then we are getting into another area of being watchful, which is in its elf its own project, and you find you're a slave of your own awareness. That somehow doesn't work and becomes too self-conscious a practice. And in order to free ourselves from too much self-conscious involvement or deprivation of the senses or emotional playback, a technique is introduced.

The technique is kind of a shock absorber in some sense. Awareness of breathing is more accentuated if there is an itch in your back or if there is self-consciousness of your foot, or if there is a hole in your socks while you walk. All of those little 44 self- consciousness es are a reminder of the general rhythm that goes on with the body. So the whole thing is trying to cooperate one's whole basic being and concentrating on the technique of awareness of ·breathing. There are several levels of mindfulness one can achieve.
