In recent years, Western scholars have shown growing interest in the roots of East Asian learning. Columbia University professor William Theodore de Bary, in his book The Liberal Tradition in China (1918), traces the evolution of liberalism in Chinese philosophy. He points out that the spirit of mutual support and enlightenment that characterises Chinese scholarship was cultivated by a method of study that depended on discussion and the sharing of ideas.
